Christmas opening hours
Posted on 18/12/2008 in News — No comments
Whilst usually against some sort of freelancer Hippocratic oath, I’m actually taking some time off between Christmas and New Years!
I’ll be out of the office from the 24th of December until the 5th of January.
I'll actually be outside of 3G access as well, so whilst I can access the net in case of emergency (very slowly, and expensively) I won't be checking my email very regularly. To get in contact with me, please call the MadPilot number (it will be redirected) on 08 6424 8234.
So have a safe holiday season, and I look forward to talking to you in 2009!
Hosting plans are go, go, go!

Whilst things have been quiet on the announcement front lately, there will shortly be a barrage as some of the larger projects get wrapped up. There have been a number of smaller projects that have been on the boil recently as well, so I thought it time to sort out some basic hosting plans.
Now, if this was another company, you would hear all about the prices now, but since this hosting will mainly be for client projects and referrals, and to be honest is quite boring, indulge me for a moment a let me list some other boring information...
It's a Gentoo machine — which would infer I'm masochist of some sort, but there is method in the madness — my requirements for some of the packages were quite specific, so it made sense to compile a number of these from source, so why not have the package manager handle that for me?
I'm trying out MyDNS, rather than my traditional bind setup, just so everything is stored in a database, which means I can write a nice little Plesk-type frontend for it (Plesk isn't really suitable for a number of reasons. Also, it's interface sucks).
I'm also trying out postfix, rather than qmail. And I wonder — why didn't I move before?!. It is orders of magnitude easier to setup and configure, and (shock horror) only has one binary — not 38 — to make it work. Oh, and the configuration files are in one place, not all over /var. Fantastic!
Other than that, it's fairly run of the mill. I'm not adverse to hosting other people's sites - the prices are pretty reasonable (for AustralianPerth based shared hosting), starting at $16.50 per month, so if you are interested, drop me a line.

Posted on 23/08/2008 in News — No comments
MadPilot Productions has moved out of it's home office, and into a new shared office in Leederville!
Although it is common for freelancers and small businesses to work in managed offices, MadPilot has decided to get together a group of other small creatives to share offices with, with the intention of being able to share work — effectively forming a virtual company. We even have a name: 220s.
The rest of the team is Grant Bissett from Speak Interactive, Alex Pooley from Alex Poolely Design, Ben Giles from Spoon Media and Gary McGhee from Buzzware.
Our new address is
220 Carr Pl
Leederville WA 6007
so if you are in the neighbourhood, drop in and say hi!
